The number 404 is one of the most recognizable on the World Wide Web, but what does it actually mean.
HTTP 404 Not Found client error response is a standard status code, indicating that the server cannot find the requested resource.
HTTP status codes were first introduced by the World Wide Web Consortium in the early 1990s. They were outlined by computer scientist, Tim Berners-Lee, the visionary who invented the world wide web (www) and developed the first web browser, the HTML markup language, the URL system, and HTTP.
A server must reply to a request, such as when a web browser asks for a web page, by providing a numerical response code along with a message. In the case of code 404, the initial digit points to a client error, such as a mistyped URL (Uniform Resource Locator). The subsequent two digits, 0 and 4, specify the exact error that occurred. The middle 0 refers to a general syntax error, such as a spelling mistake, while the last 4 simply indicates the specific error in the group of 400 status codes.
